Country Roads, Take Me Home — The Story Behind the Cowan Gristmill Design

Some designs are born from inspiration. This one was born from longing.

The 1890 Cowan Gristmill sits quietly along Route 698, just two miles west of Ewing, Virginia — visible right from Highway 58 as you pass through. For years, it was a landmark I knew by heart, because I passed it every single time we made the drive between Indiana and Virginia.

That drive was never easy. Virginia was home in one sense — I loved living there, loved the land, the scenery, the pace of life. But Indiana held everything else: our parents, our children, our grandchildren. Every trip meant leaving part of my heart behind.

And somewhere along that stretch of road — on every drive between the two — stood this beautiful old mill. Weathered tin roof. Stone foundation rising from the creek. Water spilling over the dam in a quiet, steady rush. It never changed. It was always there — steady and still — while everything else felt like it was pulling in two directions.

That mill became a kind of anchor for me. A landmark not just on the map, but in my heart.

When it came time to create a design that captured that feeling — the ache of being between two homes, the comfort of familiar roads, the longing to belong to both places at once — there was only one image that fit. The Cowan Gristmill. And only one phrase that said it all:

Country Roads, Take Me Home.

This tee isn't just a design. It's a piece of a real road, a real mill, and a very real feeling that anyone who has ever been caught between two places they love will understand.
