Natural Tunnel State Park, Duffield, Virginia
Some places find you. Others are given to you — passed down like a family heirloom by someone who loved them first.
For us, Natural Tunnel was a gift from Grandpa Howard.
Long before we ever stood at the edge of that massive rock canyon and looked down at the railroad tracks threading through the earth below, Howard had already been there. He knew what it felt like to ride the chairlift down through the trees, to hear the creek, to stand in the shadow of a tunnel that nature carved over millions of years. And because he loved it, he made sure we loved it too.

Howard passed away in 2006, but the places he showed us are still here. And every time we go back, he comes with us.
On one of our visits, Ray and I stood together right at the tunnel entrance — the same spot where trains still pass through, where the rock walls rise up on either side and the world gets quiet. It's one of those places that makes you feel small in the best possible way.

That same day, my parents rode the chairlift down through the lush green hillside — the same chairlift Howard once rode. Watching them descend through the trees, laughing together, felt like a moment worth holding onto.

And then there's Eric and little Slater — though Slater isn't so little anymore at 13. In these photos he's just a baby, grinning from the cab of the old train car #66, his dad right beside him. Three generations at the same place, drawn back again and again by something that's hard to name but easy to feel.

That's what Natural Tunnel does. It pulls you back.
The railroad crossing sign standing against the ancient rock face. The steam engine echoing through the canyon. The chairlift swaying gently above the treetops. These are the details that stayed with me — the ones I kept coming back to when it was time to design something worthy of this place.

The Natural Tunnel Virginia Graphic Tee was born from those details and from Howard's gift to our family. The vintage steam engine, the crossing sign, the tunnel itself — all of it captured in a design meant to be worn by anyone who has ever stood there and felt it.

If Natural Tunnel is part of your story too — if someone brought you there, or if you found it on your own — we'd love for you to carry a piece of it with you.
