When we lived in Virginia, our grandson Slater was just one year old. He loved it there — the barn, the horses, the chickens, the little gas station up the road with the hometown restaurant inside where the owners always let him pick out a piece of candy before we left.

One day, a couple of friends suggested we take him to a place called Duck Pond in Pennington Gap. It wasn't far — just a little drive down some country roads. So we planned a trip, packed up, and headed out.
It was exactly as beautiful as they described. A hidden gem tucked along a country roadside — the kind of place you almost can't believe exists. Perfect for a family picnic, fishing, watching the ducks, and wading in the creek. And right there in the middle of it all, a working wooden waterwheel turning slowly in the shade.

Slater was fascinated.

I remember his expression that day — the pure joy of a little boy putting his feet in a creek for the very first time. Priceless doesn't even cover it.
Slater is a teenager now. We've shared a lot of memories together. But when I look at this photograph, I'm right back there — standing at that pond, watching his face light up.
